'The Map of Consciousness' was planned as a four - part documentary programme, with the sub-headings 'Birth', 'Journey', 'Equilibrium' and 'Return'. Each section of the documentary is devoted to the major turning point of a person's life.
'The Map of Consciousness' begins with birth and then goes on to explore the 'four seasons' of a person's life - namely childhood and youth, adulthood, old age and finally death. These phases, inspite of their transient nature, are the major turning points, the 'four doors' of a person's life. The 'four doors' form the 'map of consciousneess'in all cultures. Processes such as socialisation, ancounters with others, rituals of transition, the meanings these rituals impart to our lives and the marks all these phenomena leave in diffenent cultures constitute the theme of the documentary.
While the concept of Birth is death with Part One -'Birth'- of the 'Map of Consciouness' documentary, the matter of 'beginning' and 'creation', the fundamental 'problematique' of thousand of years of human history, is studied and the approach of various cultures to the phenomenon of birth is explored.
Part Two, entitled 'Journey', is devoted to childhood andyouth, dwelling on beliefs and traditions relating to these transition periods in different cultures.
The third part of this documentary, "Equilibrium", is devoted to man's period of maturity, or adulthood. This is a period when we confront ourselves and find an "inner" equilibrium. The symbolic equivalents of this period are "fire", "the mirror", "the journey", "the labyrinth" and "the cave", all of which are dealt with in this section.
The fourth and final part of the documentary is headed "Return". It describes old age and death, ways in which different cultures perceive death, together with their funeral traditions. "The summit", "the mountain" and "the tree" are the symbolic equivalents of this period and are analysed in Part 4.
